Liputan6.com,
Sicily - Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, continues to emit ash and
lava, resulting in an earthquake in the area.
Quoted
from the VOA Indonesia page on Saturday (12/29/2018), the State of Emergency
was imposed in eastern Sicily after the earthquake Wednesday morning due to the
eruption of Mount Etna . In fact, this eruption activity has been going on for
weeks.
Andrea
Billi, a geologist with the state's National Research Council, said that the
eruption activity had been going on for days or even weeks, according to USA
Today . Experts
and firefighters inspected damage to the six most affected areas and cleared
debris from several severely damaged buildings and churches.
Italian
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte thanked hundreds of rescuers and volunteers who
helped in the affected area north of the city of Catania in Sicily.
He
also expressed hope that the injured victims would recover soon. Two deputy
prime ministers, Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, visited the residents and
affected areas.
Newer
earthquake shocks have a much lower intensity but Sicilian residents are still
afraid. Authorities say Mount Etna is a volcano that traditionally has a
long-term eruption that requires special supervision.
