If
you haven’t heard of Artea, it’s the latest brand to arrive on our shores armed
with jiggly soufflé pancakes and the usual array of photogenic teas. Nothing
new, except the store recently offered a one-for-one opening drink promotion to
attract passers-by, resulting in long lines full of curious customers.
It
was all good, until Reddit user u/TrendyWhistle made a discovery and posted a
cross section photo of Artea’s 700ml cup. The controversial issue was the
deceivingly big cup looked like it actually only held about 350ml of liquid,
half of what seemed to be advertised.
In
a strange coincidence, the brand had actually put up a Facebook post about its
long cup just an hour before the photo surfaced, claiming two reasons for the
design. First, that users who ordered hot drinks could hold the bottom part of
the cup without scalding their hands; and second, that a long cup would make
customers’ faces appear small in comparison when taking selfies. Er, sure.
Well,
other coffee chains seem to be doing just fine with their cup sleeves for hot
beverages. And according to Reddit user u/TrendyWhistle, Artea doesn’t offer
hot drinks on its menu. We’re not too sure about the science behind a long cup
vs small face either, but it seems like that’d be the least of people’s
worries.
So
long story short: customers complain, brand offers up weak explanation, folks
continue to feel cheated.
